Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is set to miss the Blues’ UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid through injury.

The Blues travel to Bucharest to take on Diego Simeone’s troops as they attempt to secure a first-leg victory. However, they will now be without Silva according to Thomas Tuchel, despite the defender having made his return to training in recent days.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, the German said: “He is not available. He is training right now. We are leaving and he is not available.”

Silva has been missing for the past three Premier League games having suffered an injury against Tottenham Hotspur in early February.

In somewhat better news for the Londoners though, both Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic are eligible to be included for the tie which is set to take place in Romania due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Tuchel said: “Very happy that both of them are in the group. They trained with us, no complaints, and they travel with us.”

As it stands, it is actually the Spaniards who are more fancied to claim victory in the first-leg. Los Rojiblancos can be backed at a price of 8/5 with William Hill to win, whilst Chelsea sit some way behind at odds of 19/10.
