Sherwood favourite for Palace job

Football - Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood is the odds on favourite to replace Tony Pulis as Crystal Palace manager, following the Welshman’s departure on Thursday evening.

Pulis was named the Premier League manager of the year after guiding the Eagles to safety and beyond last season, with twelve wins and five draws coming in the final twenty-eight games of the campaign.

However, a breakdown between the fifty-six year old and the club has led to them parting company, and to out of work bosses clambering for this early vacant position.

Sherwood replaced Andre Villas Boas as Tottenham Hotspur manager last season, and coincidentally was in charge for the same amount of matches as Pulis, winning exactly half of his twenty-eight in the Spurs dugout.

Nevertheless, ex-Southampton boss Maurico Pochettino replaced the former Premier League winning captain in the summer, leaving him on the lookout for a new job.

Sherwood is odds on to be named the new boss at Selhurst Park, with Bet 365 offering a best price of 1.53 (8/15) though he faces competition from Malky Mackay, who has himself been out of work since late December.

Mackay guided Cardiff City to the Premier League fifteen months ago, but lost his job in similar circumstances to Pulis.

He worked with Palace sporting director Ian Moody at Cardiff, has a strong relationship with Steve Parish, the chairman of the London club and is a 3.0 (2/1) shot with William Hill to be given the nod.

Other names in the frame are former West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke, ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon and Chris Huyton, who hasn’t worked since losing his job at Norwich City in April.

Clarke can be backed at 21.0 (20/1) with Bet Victor, with Lennon a 26.0 (25/1) shot with the same firm while Hughton is widely available at 34.0 (33/1).

David Moyes is also priced at 34.0 (33/1), but early indications suggest that the former Manchester United manager is not interested in the position.

Keith Millen, who has once again been place in temporary charge of the club, is a 41.0 (40/1) chance to be given the job on a permanent basis with Bet 365.
