Jan VertonghenTottenham defender Jan Vertonghen could miss the start of the season with an ankle injury he picked up in pre-season game against Sunderland.

The friendly match was played at the Hong Kong Stadium, with a rain-soaked pitch giving both managers a real headache.

Spurs centre-back Jan Vertonghen twisted his ankle after coming on as a substitute and he is now awaiting a scan on his injury.

“It seems like he twisted his ankle, it could be sprained ankle ligaments,” said Andre Villas-Boas.

“Hopefully there is not too much damage as he has a good range of movement still, but it is swollen a bit.

“We hope it is nothing very serious, the MRI scan is positive and he’ll be back for the start of the season.”

As things stand now, the Belgian should be ready for the start of the season, with Tottenham hoping to finally achieve Champions League qualification.

However, with the Spurs yet to sign a high-profile striker, they are no less than 3.20 (11/5) with Ladbrokes to achieve a top 4 finish.
