Aston Villa vs Sunderland Preview

All eyes will be towards the bottom of the Premier League this evening as seventeenth place Aston Villa take on a Sunderland side just three points, and two places above them.

The hosts, who go in to the game on the back on last Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, were minutes away from dropping back in to the bottom three on Saturday, but Emerson Boyce’s own goal denied eighteenth place Wigan Athletic a much needed victory.

Following this game, Villa travel to Norwich City and host Chelsea, before facing Wigan on the final day of the season.

Paul Lambert remains without Marc Albrighton, Richard Dunne and Chris Herd, but could hand a start to Karim El Ahmadi after he impressed as a substitute seven days ago.

Top scorer Christian Benteke is favourite to get the first goal of the game at 5.5 (9/2) with Bet Victor, while Andreas Weimann is a 9.0 (8/1) shot with same firm.

Villa are favourites for the win at a best price of 2.38 (11/8) with Sunderland as highly priced as the 3.4 (12/5) on offer from Bet 365, whilst the draw available at the same price with the same firm.

The visitors, who followed up their fine win against fierce rivals Newcastle United with victory over Everton last time out, currently sit five points clear of the drop-zone, with four games to play.

Home games against Stoke City and Southampton follow tonight’s fixture, while the Black Cats end the season with a tricky test at Tottenham Hotspur.

Paolo Di Canio has Craig Gardner available for selection following his two match suspension, though Phil Bardsley is doubtful with an ankle injury and Connor Wickham definitely misses out with a calf problem.

Stephane Sessegnon is 10.0 (9/1) with Bet Victor to open the scoring, while Gardner is worth considering at 17.0 (16/1) with Coral.

Aston Villa ran out 1-0 winners in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light back in November, but with both sides desperate for the points a more open game is expected.

With this in mind, you might be tempted to take advantage of the 3.75 (11/4) on offer from Coral for there to be four or more goals in the game.
