Europa League History

As the UEFA Cup, a competition officially established in 1971, was starting to lose much of its appeal, Europe’s governing body chiefs decided to revamp the competition’s format and renamed it Europa League. The new format was designed to mimic that of the Champions League, which had proved to be a major success in the football world. The new competition kicked-off in the season 2009/2010, with 48 clubs being divided into 12 groups of four.

Top two teams from each group would qualify for the first knockout round, together with eight 3rd-placed sides from Champions League group stages. Atletico Madrid became the first team to win Europa League trophy after beating Fulham in the final, before Porto claimed the title the following year by coming on top of countrymen Braga. Even though leading football figures doubted the changes would help revive the competition formerly known as the UEFA Cup, Europa League has proven to be a major success and we can already say it has served its purpose.
