Manchester City

Manchester City Football Club was founded by St Mark’s Church in 1880 and in 1887 they changed their name to Ardwick AFC and moved to Hyde Road. Ardwick AFC was one of the founders of the second division on English Football in 1892 and in 1894 the club changed their name to Manchester City, with their intention to represent an entire City of Manchester.

The club struggled to make their presence known in the early years of its existence, but enjoyed a very successful period in the late 60s and early 70s, during which period they won the league title, FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup. City were relegated to the third division in 1998 and spend the next decade bouncing between the top two tiers of English football. In August 2008 the club was purchased by Abu Dhabi Group, with the new owners investing huge amounts of cash in order to create a competitive squad and Manchester City are now considered one of the main candidates for the Premier League title.

Club History

Manchester City was founded as St Mark’s in 1880 by the members of the St Mark’s Church in East Manchester, but the club soon moved to Hyde Road in Ardwick and was renamed Ardwick AFC. The new club was one of the founders of English Second Division in 1892, before becoming Manchester City Football Club just two years later. The club’s first major achievements included the Second Division title in 1899, allowing them to gain promotion to the First Division, as well as the FA Cup title in 1904.

Main stand at Hyde Road stadium was destroyed by fire in 1920 and the club moved to new stadium called Maine Road three years later. Manchester City managed to win their first ever First Division title in 1937, but were relegated to the second tier the following year, despite boasting the best scoring record in the top flight. The club won their third FA Cup title in 1956, with the final game against Birmingham remembered by the fact that City keeper Bert Trautmann continued to play despite breaking his neck.

City were again relegated to the second division in 1963, but they soon returned to the top flight and even managed to win their second league title in 1968, beating their local rivals Manchester United to the first place in the standings. City went on to win few more major titles in the early 70s, but then experienced a major trophy drought that lasted for 35 years.

The club experienced a real revival at the start of the new millennium, with Abu Dhabi Group completing the club takeover in August 2008. They wasted no time or money to get the club back on track, with heavy spending over the next few transfer windows helping the Citizens build one of the best squads in the Premiership. The club ended the 35-year trophy drought by lifting the FA Cup title in 2011 and are now on course to win their first league title after 44 years.

Key Players

Having spent incredible amounts of cash on new players, Manchester City currently boast a star-studded line-up that includes players like David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany, with all these players regarded as important part of the side. England international keeper Joe Hart and former Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure are also considered to be key players at Etihad Stadium, although coach Roberto Mancini has got to be given credit for creating a very good team out of all those stars.
