On 30 May 2006, Aguero was bought by Atletico Madrid for a fee of €23 million. After scoring his first goals for los Colchoneros against Athletic Bilbao, the player scored his second goal for the club by using his hand, which, together with his style of play, earned him comparisons with legendary Diego Armando Maradona. The following season, Aguero scored 19 league goals and finished third in the top goalscorer table, behind Dani Guiza and Luis Fabiano.

In season 2008-2009, Aguero established a formidable strike partnership with Diego Forlan, with their impressive attacking performances helping Atletico achieve Champions League qualification. That was club’s only major success during Aguero’s time at Vicente Calderon and after Atletico continued to underperform the following season, media reports started linking Aguero with a move to a bigger club. After spending five years at Vicente Calderon, the player was signed by Manchester City in the summer of 2011 for a fee of £35 million.

Aguero had a great start to his career at Eastlands, scoring two goals and setting up another after coming on a second-half substitute against Swansea and he immediately became an important part of Roberto Mancini’s squad that gained the early advantage over their title rivals, partly thanks to amazing 6:1 win at Old Trafford.

International Career

After playing a small role in Argentina’s road to success at the Under-20 World Cup in 2005, Aguero almost single handedly brought his nation the title at the same level two years later. He became the tournament’s top scorer with six goals in seven appearances and was elected the Player of the Tournament. Aguero also played an important part in Argentina’s push for the 2008 Summer Olympics title, while he made his senior debut on 3 September 2006 in a friendly against Brazil.

The forward was part of Argentina’s 23-man squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and he performed pretty well at the tournament, but couldn’t prevent his side from getting eliminated in the quarter-finals. Aguero was probably the only bright spot in Argentina squad at the 2011 Copa America, but, once again, that wasn’t enough to bring his side long awaited title. Aguero has scored 14 goals in 33 games for Argentina and is currently considered a first team regular in Alejandro Sabella’s squad.
