Portugal vs GreeceEuro 2004 finalists Portugal and Greece square off at Estadio Nacional in Oeiras, with both sides stepping up their preparations for the 2014 World Cup.

Having shown a great deal of potential at the Euro 2012, when they narrowly missed out on the final appearance, the Seleccao will be eager to each the final stages at the tournament in Brazil as well.

Portugal once again qualified for a major tournament via the play-offs, defeating Sweden both home and away, but they seem to be in a very good form at the moment.

After hammering Cameroon 5-1 in the friendly in March, the Seleccao aim to get revenge on Greece for the defeat in the Euro 2004 final, with Paulo Bento’s side 1.53 (8/15) favourites to extend their winning run.

The boss has served up several surprises when naming his final World Cup squad, leaving the likes of Ricardo Quaresma and Danny out while including Rafa Silva and injury-plagued Nani, among other players.

Paulo Bento has some selection problems ahead of the Greece clash, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe unlikely to feature due to injury, whilst Fabio Coentrao should be rested after helping Real win the Champions League trophy.

Ruben Amorim and William Carvalho have resumed full training, but Joao Moutinho, Raul Meireles and Hugo Almeida remain injury doubts.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Patricio – Pereira, Bruno Alves, R. Costa, Almeida – Silva, William, Veloso – Varela, Postiga, Nani.

It was in Portugal that Greece enjoyed the biggest success in the history of the national team, defeating the hosts twice to emerge as shock winners of the Euro 2004.

Ethniki poured more misery on their more illustrious opponents by defeating them in a 2008 friendly as well, so they are 7.75 (27/4) to make it four in a row.

Just like their next opponents, Greece qualified for the 2014 World Cup via the play-offs, recording a 4-2 aggregate win over Romania.

The team were since beaten by Korea Republic in a March friendly with the Portugal clash set to serve as another important test before they head off to Brazil.

Despite the lack of action on club level, star striker Kostas Mitroglou has been included in the squad and he will be eager to prove his worth in Lisbon.

Celtic’s Georgios Samaras and effervescent captain Giorgos Karagounis will also be men to watch when Greece take on Portugal.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Karnezis – Torosidis, Sokratis, Katsouranis, Holebas – Karagounis, Maniatis, Tziolis – Salpingidis, Mitroglou, Samaras.
