Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid preview

Barcelona vs AtleticoBarcelona aim to finish the job after holding Atletico to a 1-1 draw at Vicente Calderon, but los Colchoneros are not prepared to go down without a fight despite not winning at Camp Nou since 2005.

Having lost the Spanish Super Cup trophy to Real Madrid last term, the Catalans are hoping to make things right this season.

They are in a good position after Neymar’s first goal for the club secured them a 1-1 draw in the first leg, but defeating in-form Atletico Madrid will be no easy task.

Barcelona have enjoyed a bright start to the league campaign, recording a 7-0 victory over Levante before defeating Malaga by the narrowest of margins at the weekend.

That match proved that the Catalans still struggle every time Lionel Messi is not on the pitch, so no doubt Gerardo Martino will be delighted to welcome him back to the starting line-up from a muscle injury.

And while home win pays 1.36 (4/11) at Betfred, the Argentine superstar is 1.40 (2/5) with 888sport to mark his return with a goal.

Meanwhile, Adriano Correia faces a fitness test, but Carles Puyol, Isaac Cuenca and Ibrahim Afellay continue to miss out.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Valdes – Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Alba – Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta – Sanchez, Messi, Pedro.

Atletico Madrid have done brilliantly to decrease the gap behind Spain’s strongest sides over the years, but they have yet to prove they can mount a serious title challenge in La Liga.

The fact they finished the league campaign just nine points behind Real Madrid, while defeating the local rivals in Copa del Rey final is enough to suggest los Colchoneros are on the right track, but they haven’t had nearly as much success in matches against Barcelona.

The 1-1 draw a week ago ended Atletico’s six-match losing run in matches against the Catalans, while it is important to note they have lost last seven games at Camp Nou.

Even so, having started the season really well, los Colchoneros have reason to hope ahead of the return leg, but they are no less than 5.75 (19/4) with 888sport to lift the Super Cup trophy.

Diego Simeone is without selection worries at the moment, but he should recall Koke and Mario Suarez after they missed the 5-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano.

After scoring in his first ever match against his former employers, David Villa is 4.50 (7/2) at Betfred to pour more misery on the Catalans.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Courtois – Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis – Koke, Mario, Gabi, Arda – Diego Costa, Villa.
