Sunderland defender John O’Shea is adamant that Republic of Ireland need to beat Slovakia in order to keep everything in their own hands.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s men are tied with Slovakia and Russia at the top of Group B, the two teams they are set to face within next few days.

Ireland host Slovakia before traveling to Russia four days later and John O’Shea says the first match is a must-win game for the Irish.

“Without a doubt. It has to be, especially if you are talking about wanting to finish top of the group.

“It’s got to be a home win. But it’s easier said than done because you know the qualities of the teams.

There have been a couple of strange results here and there. You might be saved, but you would rather keep your destiny in your own hands.”

The Sunderland defender is determined to qualify for what would be his first major tournament.

“Some of the lads obviously have been to the World Cup, but I haven’t made it to a major tournament yet, so it would be a major part of my career. It would be a major achievement.”

Ireland are 2.00 (1/1) to claim maximum points against Slovakia, while Giovanni Trapattoni’s men are no less than 3.80 (14/5) to win Group B.
