Roy Hodgson is set to name his squad for this summer’s World Cup finals on May 12th – the day after the Premier League season comes to an end.

The Three Lions boss will select thirty players, with seven of those set to be placed on stand-by come June 2nd.

With only 23 places available, there are no fewer than 24 players who are odds on to make the cut for the party who will fly to Brazil, and here we look at some the outsiders fighting for a place on the plane.

Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy was selected by Hodgson for his Euro 2012 squad, but he had to withdraw after picking up a finger injury in the lead up to the tournament.

His one and only full international cap came as a substitute for Jack Butland in a friendly against Italy in August 2012, and he is priced at 2.25 (5/4) with Bet Victor to be selected with Joe Hart, Fraser Forster and Ben Foster seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.

Butland himself is a 15.0 (14/1) shot, while fellow goalkeepers David Stockdale and Paul Robinson are priced at 21.0 (20/1) with BetFred and 67.0 (66/1) with Bet Victor respectively.

Luke Shaw, who won his first cap after replacing Ashley Cole in the friendly victory over Denmark in February, is widely available at 3.0 (2/1) to be selected with Cole expected to make the cut despite struggling to hold down a first team place under Jose Mourinho this season.

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, whose potential selection has been questioned in some quarters, can be backed at 3.5 (5/2) with Bet Victor while Gareth Barry, who was last capped in May 2012, is generously priced at 10.0 (9/1) with Paddy Power after an impressive campaign on loan at Everton.

As for strikers, Southampton’s Rickie Lambert is a 2.5 (6/4) chance with 888 Sport ahead of West Ham United’s Andy Carroll, who is priced at 2.88 (15/8) with Bet Victor, and Jermaine Defoe, who is 9.0 (8/1) with Coral following his move to Toronto FC.
