England vs Belgium preview

Roy Hodgson started his career as England boss with a narrow win over Norway, but it is at Wembley against Belgium that his side will have to show another convincing performance if they are to depart for Poland and Ukraine in good spirits.

An under-strength England side were far from impressive against Norway, but they still managed to record a win at a difficult ground and the new boss can certainly take some heart from that showing.

The problem is that both Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry have since been forced to withdraw from the Euro 2012 squad because of injuries, with Phil Jagielka and Jordan Henderson brought to replace them.

Seeing that Scott Parker remains doubtful with an Achilles injury, the Three Lions are desperately short of options in the centre of the park, but at least James Milner’s versatility will come in handy as he is set to be deployed as a centre midfielder.

Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Glen Johnson continue to miss out, while Ashley Young could be rested as he is not 100% fit.

Considering all the problems the team are facing at the moment, England don’t look a good bet at odds of 1.62 (5/8) offered by BetVictor.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-1-1): Hart – Jones, Terry, Cahill, Cole – Walcott, Milner, Henderson, Downing – Gerrard – Carroll.

In spite of showing a lot of potential in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, Belgium missed out on the place in the play-offs as they finished the campaign two points behind second-placed Turkey.

Following the friendly win over Romania and draws against France and Greece, coach Georges Leekens decided to leave for Club Brugge, with his assistant Marc Wilmots leading the side for the first time in the 2-2 draw with Montenegro.

Belgium missed quite a few first team regulars in the game against Montenegro and the situation is similar ahead of the clash at Wembley.

Nicolas Lombaerts and Toby Alderweireld miss out through injury, whereas Vincent Kompany is a major doubt.

With the likes of Hazard, Dembele, Lukaku and Mirallas in the side, Belgium should be able to continue their impressive scoring run and they are 1.67 (2/3) with Ladbrokes to score at Wembley.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Courtois – Odoi, Kompany, Vermaelen, Vertonghen – Witsel, Defour, Fellaini – Hazard, Benteke, Dembele.
