Bayern Munich vs Hamburger SV preview

Bayern Munich are looking to record the third win in a row following the opening defeat to Borussia M’gladbach, whereas HSV are eager to make amends for the slow start of the season.

The Bavarians did well to reinforce the squad after yet another disappointing season, with Manuel Neuer, Rafinha and Jerome Boateng all arriving this summer, but they couldn’t help the team avoid defeat to Borussia M’Gladbach in their opening game.

Nevertheless, Jupp Heynckes’ side did show some improvement in the narrow win over Wolfsburg, before beating Zurich 2:0 in the Champions League play-off stage.

With key players Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery still not fully fit, the Bavarians could need few more weeks to hit the ground running, but at least they managed to win back some of the lost confidence with wins over Wolfsburg and Zurich.

Seeing that HSV are in big problems at the moment, odds of 1.33 (1/3) offered by William Hill on home win look decent enough.

Thomas Muller should return to the starting line-up, but Arjen Robben is a doubt after playing through the pain barrier against Zurich.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Rafinha, Boateng, Badstuber, Lahm – Gustavo, Schweinsteiger – Muller, Kroos, Ribery – Gomez.

Hamburg squad have undergone major changes this summer, so nobody is surprised to see them struggling at the moment.

HSV stayed without no less than six key players as Van Nistelrooy, Ze Roberto, Rost, Mathijsen, Pitroipa and Trochowski all left, while they did bring several talented youngsters, who have yet to prove they can make it at the big stage.

Coach Michael Oening now has a very talented but pretty inexperienced team at his disposal, and he will need a lot of time to create a homogenous unit, as witnessed by the poor results in their opening games.

Hamburg were completely outplayed by champions Borussia Dortmund before largely struggling in home game against newly promoted Hertha, so I can’t see them faring much better at Alianz Arena.

With Bayern set to attack from the off, HSV are likely to have a lot of space to exploit, and I see a good value in backing Mladen Petric to score at odds of 4.00 (3/1) offered by Unibet.

Robert Tesche should replace Per Ciljan Skjelbred in the starting 11, while striker Marcus Berg could play some part after recovering from injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Drobny – Diekmeier, Westermann, Mancienne, Aogo – Tesche, Rincon – Tore, Son, Elia – Petric.
