Europa League final preview: Benfica vs Chelsea

By: Nemanja Lazarevic

Chelsea vs BenficaBenfica aim to get revenge on the Blues for the Champions League quarter-finals defeat last season and finally win the first European trophy since 1962 after six straight defeats in the final.

Chelsea, on the other hand, hope to become the fourth team to lift three major European trophies after finally winning the Champions League trophy last term.

Even with Jorge Jesus constantly fielding weakened sides in European games ever since the Eagles were eliminated from Europe’s elite competition, his side did really well to reach the Europa League final.

Benfica experienced some problems against Newcastle and Fenerbahce, but eventually eliminated both opponents to earn their place in the final at Amsterdam ArenA.

The Eagles were hoping to secure the league trophy before the clash with Chelsea, but last-gasp defeat to Porto means they will probably miss out on the Primeira Liga title.

The loss to their arch rivals came at the worst possible time and that is probably one of the reasons why the Portuguese side are as much as 2.25 (5/4) at bet365 to lift the coveted trophy.

Jorge Jesus will have Ola John available after he missed the second leg against Fenerbahce through suspension, but Maxi Pereira is banned.

The good news is there are no fresh injury worries, although striker Oscar Cardozo could be recalled to the starting line-up.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Artur – Almeida, Garay, Luisao, Melgarejo – Perez, Matic – Salvio, Gaitan, John – Cardozo.

Chelsea may have failed in almost every other competition this term, but their Europa League campaign has progressed quite nicely.

The Blues had a pretty favourable draw, but they, nonetheless, managed to reach the final with relative ease as their huge experience proved vital in European matches.

Having come this far, Chelsea will want to win the Europa League title in Amsterdam and thus continue their great run in Europe.

With the team already securing Champions League qualification through league finish, Rafa Benitez is expected to field his strongest side against Benfica, with the Blues 1.67 (2/3) favourites at Paddy Power to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are 2.50 (3/2) with William Hill to win in regular time, but it is not as if they will have an easy job at Amsterdam ArenA.

John Terry and Eden Hazard both look set to miss out after picking up injuries in weekend’s win over Aston Villa that saw Frank Lampard become the highest scoring player in the history of the club.

The veteran midfielder is likely to start against Benfica, but Demba Ba is cup-tied and Oriol Romeu lacks match fitness.

Probable strating line-up (4-2-3-1): Cech – Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole – Lampard, Luiz – Ramires, Oscar, Mata – Torres.
