Fresh from being named October’s Premier League Player of the Month, Jamie Vardy has become the favourite to finish the season as the division’s top scorer.

The Sheffield-born striker has scored twelve goals in twelve league games so far this season, eleven of which have come in his last nine.

He is only the second player to score in nine consecutive English top-flight games and will move level with Ruud van Nistelrooy on a record ten should he net against Newcastle United a week on Saturday.

He is now five clear of his nearest rivals in the race to land the Golden Boot, with teammate Riyad Mahrez, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Odion Ighalo of Watford all tied on seven and can be backed at 4.0 (3/1) with Coral to finish the season in first place on the scoring charts.

Sergio Aguero, who having won the prize last season began the campaign as favourite to do so this time around, is one of six players to be tied on six goals.

Vardy is already just six short of the shortest tally that has ever clinched the award, with five players bagging eighteen across three seasons at the end of the 1990s, though at his current strike rate he is set to rival Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of thirty-one in a twenty game season.

The twenty-eight year old’s rise to prominence has been quite something. Just three-and-a-half years ago Vardy was plying his trade in non-league football with Fleetwood Town.

Thirty-four goals in forty games helped the Cod Army clinch the Conference title, and encouraged the Foxes to splash out an initial £1m to secure his services – a record fee for a non-league player.

He scored sixteen goals in his second season with the East Midlands outfit to help them win the Championship and impressed in his first season at the highest level in England with five goals – a total he matched thirteen minutes into the seventh game of this campaign.

He is set to win his fifth cap for England as they take on Spain in a friendly on Friday evening and is 4.8 (19/5) to score at any time with 888 Sport.
