Manchester United vs Wigan preview

Manchester United look to continue the good run of results after the impressive victory at Craven Cottage, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s players have every right to feel optimistic before the clash with Wigan.

The Latics, too, have reason for optimism, having beaten West Brom away before sharing spoils with title contenders Chelsea and Liverpool.

For such a high-profile side, Manchester United have had more than a fair share of disappointments this season.

The 6:1 home defeat to Manchester City as well as Carling Cup and Champions League elimination would have destabilized any other club in Europe, but not Manchester United.

One of the things that make this team so great is their ability to quickly recover from any disappointment, with their recent run of results the perfect proof.

Following the Champions League exit to Basel, the Red Devils have won three straight Premier League games, scoring 11 and conceding just 1 goal in the process.

With that in mind, it is little wonder that home win pays just 1.17 (1/6) at Paddy Power. On the other hand, United are 1.50 (1/2) with 888sport to win by two goals or more.

Utility player Phil Jones have been cleared to face Wigan, but Ashley Young is set to miss next few weeks with a knee problem. Rio Ferdinand is not yet ready to return.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Lindegaard – Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra – Carrick, Giggs – Valencia, Rooney, Nani – Hernandez.

Wigan may still be in the bottom three, but they have shown a lot of improvement of late and look ready to leave the relegation zone.

That is obviously unlikely to happen after the Manchester United game, but the Latics are, nonetheless, going to try and spring a surprise at Old Trafford.

Roberto Martinez’s side managed to end the nine-match losing run in mid November and they have been pretty impressive ever since.

Wigan picked up 9 points from last 6 Premier League games despite facing sides like Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in the process, although they were very lucky not to lose against the Blues and Reds at home.

The Latics enter this game without any pressure and full of confidence after the good run of results, and backing them to score at Old Trafford, at odds of 2.25 (5/4) offered by Ladbrokes might be a good idea.

Steve Gohouri and Hugo Rodallega are both doubtful, but Emerson Boyce and Chris Kirkland remain sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-2-1): Al Habsi – Stam, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa – McCarthy, Diame, Jones – Moses, Gomez – Sammon.
