Celtic have signed James McCarthy on a free transfer following his departure from Crystal Palace.

McCarthy was a free agent following his exit from Premier League club Palace at the end of June.

The 30-year-old central midfielder joined the Eagles from Everton in the summer of 2019.

The Republic of Ireland international made 10 starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for Palace last season.

During the 2019-20 campaign, McCarthy made 16 starts and 17 substitute appearances in the league for the Eagles.

The former Wigan Athletic man has signed a four-year contract with Celtic.

McCarthy told Celtic’s official website: “To have signed for Celtic is a brilliant feeling and this is a special day for me and my family.

“I know all about the club, the size of it and all the success it’s enjoyed, particularly in recent years.

“I’m looking forward to pulling on the Hoops, playing at Paradise and helping the team deliver more success to these amazing fans in the seasons ahead.”

Celtic can be backed at 3/1 on Betfair to win the Scottish Premiership title this season.
