Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is widely considered to be the best English footballer at the moment and he is an integral part of Manchester United and the national team of England. The player who started his career at Everton has won two Player of the Year awards and is currently the third highest-paid football player in the world, behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Boasting impressive technical skills and incredible work rate, Rooney can cover every single position in attack, while he is also occasionally used in centre midfield by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. The 26-year-old already has more than 70 England caps to his name, although he looks likely to miss the Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland after being slapped a three-match ban for the red card he received in the final Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.

Just few weeks later, the player made the headlines by scoring the last gasp winner for Everton against Arsenal, which ended the Gunners’ 30-match unbeaten record and make Rooney the youngest ever scorer in the Premier League history. The youngster continued his rich vein of form over the next two seasons, thus attracting interest from big European clubs. After the player refused an improved contract offer from the Toffees, Manchester United managed to agree a £25.6 million fee with Everton in August 2004 and Rooney subsequently moved to Old Trafford.

Despite arriving at Old Trafford as a teenager, Rooney didn’t need a lot of time to prove his worth at the highest stage, with the hat-trick in his debut against Fenerbahce only a sign of things to come. Rooney went on to become an essential part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, winning four Premier League titles, two Carling Cups, UEFA Champions League trophy and FIFA Club World Cup with United, while winning numerous awards for personal achievements.

International Career

Rooney was handed his England debut in February 2003 when he was just seventeen, thus becoming the youngest ever player to play for England and he soon became an essential part of the national team. He was called for the Euro 2004, where he scored a brace against Switzerland before picking up an injury in the quarter-final game with Portugal.

Despite struggling with injury, Rooney made England 2006 World Cup squad, but he was unable to make an impact in Germany, with England once again eliminated on penalties in the quarter-finals. He was also pretty disappointing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, just like the rest of the England squad. In spite of scoring almost thirty goals for the national team, Rooney never quite managed to achieve success with England, with his fiery temperament often causing more harm than good. The red card he received in the final Euro 2012 qualifier saw Rooney get a three-match ban that will prevent him from playing in England’s group games at the final tournament.
