AC Milan

Established in 1899 as Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club, AC Milan became part of Italian Football Federation in 1900, with the league title in 1901 and back to back King’s Medal trophies hinting that they would soon become one of the most famous clubs in both Italy and Europe. Nicknamed the Rossoneri, AC Milan holds a fierce local rivalry with Internazionale, with whom they share the ground Giuseppe Meazza.

The club are currently living one of the most successful periods in their history that started with the arrival of Silvio Berlusconi, who became the 21st club president in 1986. The Rossoneri have since won eight Serie A titles and five European Cup trophies, and are still going strong on both domestic and international stage. Together with Boca Juniors of Argentina, AC Milan are one of the most decorated clubs in the world as far as international titles are concerned.

Club History

The club was founded at Fiaschetteria Toscana on Via Berchet, Milan in 1899 and was first known as Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club. President Alfred Edwards enlisted the team in the Italian Football Federation the following year, which saw the Rossoneri play just one game in an entire season. They, however, managed to win the league title in their first full season and added two King’s Medal trophies as well.

In 1906 and 1907 Milan managed to win first back to back league titles, but little did they know then that they would have to wait for another 54 years before claiming their fourth league championship. In 1926 the club moved to their current home, San Siro, which is also known as Giuseppe Meazza and they soon changed its name from Milan F.C to Milan Associazione Sportiva.

Milan won their fourth league title in 1951, mostly thanks to the Swedish trio of Gunnar Nordhal, Nils Liedholm and Gunnar Gren. After winning another league title in 1955, the Rossoneri took part in the first edition of the European Cup the following season, but were stopped by Real Madrid in the semis. The club enjoyed some success during the 60s, but then entered a rough patch that lasted for almost 15 years, that is until Silvio Berlusconi was elected club’s president.

The media mogul managed to attract such stars as Arigo Sachi, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard to San Siro, with the Dutch trio having a big role to play in club’s uptrend in fortunes. Milan went on to win eight Serie A titles, five European Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup, thus becoming one of the most successful clubs in European football.

Key Players

Milan’s current squad boasts a nice blend of youth and experience, although experienced forwards Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Antonio Cassano and Robinho are considered to be essential members of the squad. Brazilian defender Thiago Silva also falls into that category, whereas midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng is also showing massive potential. Despite entering the final stage of their careers, long-term club servants Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Massimo Ambrosini and Gennaro Gattuso still have important role to play in Maxi Allegri’s side.
