Inter Milan

In March 1908, a group of rebels decided to form a club that would not only accept Italian players, but also foreigners, and Football Club Internazionale Milano was born. The club have enjoyed a lot of success throughout the history, winning no less than thirty domestic titles and three European Cups, while establishing a fierce local rivalry with AC Milan.

The club is affectively known as the Neroazzurri, with gold, black and blue regarded as club colours from the very foundation up to the present day. Club’s recent successes include five consecutive Serie A championships, Champions League title in 2010 and Club World Cup trophy the same year. Inter owe much of their latest success to club owner Massimo Moratti, who has invested significant funds since taking over the reigns in 1995.

Club History

On 9 March 1908, a group of rebels formed Football Club Internazionale Milano, hoping to see not only Italian, but also foreign players wear what would soon become a coveted jersey. Just two years later, Inter managed to win their first league title, led by captain Virgilio Fossati, who died few years later in World War I. After winning their second title in 1920, Inter was forced to merge with Milanese Union Sportiva during the Fascist era, and they won their third Scudetto in 1930 under the name Ambrosiana Inter.

The Neroazzurri won their first Coppa Italia title in 1939, led by legendary Giuseppe Meazza, before winning another league trophy the following year. After the World War II ended, the club changed their name to Internazionale Football Club Milano, with the name remaining to the present day.

The club enjoyed a lot of success during the 50s and 60s, and they became known as La Grande Inter with Helenio Herrera as head coach. In 1964 and 1965, Inter won back to back European Cup titles, while they failed to make it three in a row after losing to Celtic in the European Cup final in 1966. The 70s and 80s were not so successful, even if Inter won three league titles and two Coppa Italia trophies during that period.

The next fifteen years are seen as the worst period in club’s history, with Inter largely trailing behind rivals Milan and Juventus, who both enjoyed a lot of success in Italy and Europe. Despite the arrival of Massimo Moratti and star players like Ronaldo, Vieri, Recoba and Cannavaro, Inter largely struggled at the end of the 20th and the beginning of 21st century, but little did they know that the club would soon embark on a remarkable run.

After being awarded the Serie A title in 2006, Inter went on to win four more league trophies in a row, while finally winning their third major European title by beating Bayern in the Champions League final in 2010. Internazionale FC remains the only Italian club that have never been relegated from the top flight, which is something that all Inter fans are proud of.

Key Players

Club icon Javier Zanetti is still considered an essential part of the squad despite turning 38 in the summer and the captain is currently going through his 17th season in Inter jersey. Midfielders Wesley Sneijder and Esteban Cambiasso are also considered valuable members of the squad and they are responsible for making this team tick, but striker Diego Milito is no longer regarded as an important player, even if he had a big role to play in Inter’s most successful season in history.
