Former Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri is the surprise favourite for a managerial role with AS Roma, according to various reports in Italian media.

Current Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco is apparently on thin ice following the team’s UEFA Champions League exit at the hands of FC Porto in mid-week. Calcio Mercato claim that Ranieri has been pushed to the top of the list, with the squad pushing for either the Italian or Christian Panucci.

Elsewhere, Corriere dello Sport state that Ranieri, who won the Premier League with Leicester City, is the only candidate to take over at the Stadio Olimpico.

Should Ranieri take the job, it would be his first managerial return to Italy since a short spell in charge of Inter Milan in 2012. He has also enjoyed two periods in Rome, first as player as he came through the youth ranks, and then as manager between 2009-2011.

He was most recently in charge of Fulham but was sacked after only just over three months in charge having won only three matches.

Roma head into Monday evening’s game against Empoli in fifth in the Serie A table and 28 points behind leaders Juventus. The Giallorossi sit at odds of 1/2 with William Hill to earn victory.
