Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg Preview

Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg will be aiming to establish themselves inside the Bundesliga top four as they square off at the Westfalenstadion on Sunday.

The hosts come into the game off the back of an inconsistent run of form, an aspect that has seen former Head Coach Lucien Favre lose his job and Edin Terzic be appointed as interim boss. Die Borussen have won three out of their last eight games in all competitions and sit eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich following the shock 2-1 defeat against Union Berlin before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg are in a very positive vein of form at the current time. Five wins in their last seven Bundesliga matches has seen them rise to fourth and just six points off the top. That is even more impressive considering that have only tasted defeat once in the league this season, whilst Dortmund have been defeated five times already.

Oliver Glasner’s men are intriguingly the least fancied to pick up three points at odds of 9/2 with Betfair, whilst Dortmund can be backed at a price of 4/7 to win. Elsewhere, a draw sits at 10/3.

One aspect that could be expected as the two sides face off are goals. Whilst neither Dortmund nor Wolfsburg have particularly bad defensive records this season, all the signs point to both sides finding the net. Of Dortmund’s last seven matches, both sides have scored in each of them, whilst that has occured in six out of Wolfsburg’s last seven league ties. Both sides to score at the Signal Iduna Park sits at a price of 8/13 with William Hill.

One of the most lethal forwards in European football this season, Erling Haaland, is edging closer to full fitness having missed the last four Bundesliga games but may only be fit enough for the bench. Should he start, he sits at odds of 23/10 with Paddy Power to net the opening goal of the game. In further fitness news, Thorgan Hazard and Marcel Schmelzer are both restricted to the sidelines, with Mats Hummels also a doubt.

Wolfsburg are also struggling with fitness problems, specifically related to COVID-19.  Maximilian Arnold, Maximilian Philipp, Maxence Lacroix, Jerome Roussillon and Xaver Schlager all had to quarantine over the festive period so maybe unlikely to play a part. One positive for Glasner though is the inclusion of forward Wout Weghorst. The Dutchman has hit nine goals already this season and sits at 5/1 to strike first on Sunday.
