Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro is a Portuguese forward who currently plays for Real Madrid. The 26-year-old is also a captain of the Portuguese national team and is believed to be one of two best players in the world alongside Lionel Messi. Ronaldo started his career at Sporting Lisbon, but soon moved to Manchester United, where he made a name for himself, mostly thanks to amazing dribbling skills and excellent goalscoring record.

Real Madrid made Ronaldo the most expensive player in history by paying Manchester United £80 million for his services, but the player more than justified the hefty price tag, as he currently boast the record of more than a goal per match. Ronaldo can play as a winger or centre forward, with his powerful shot and amazing heading ability some of his trademark features, together with the thunderbolt free-kicks.

Ronaldo scored two goals on his debut for Sporting in 2002, thus becoming the first ever player to play for club’s Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, B side and first team in a single season. Foreign scouts quickly spotted the player’s potential and in November 2002, Ronaldo was invited to a trial with Arsenal. However, it was Manchester United who ended up getting the player, after he impressed both Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United players at the inauguration of Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Immediately upon his arrival at Old Trafford, Ronaldo was given the number 7 shirt, which was previously worn by club icons George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham, but he needed a lot of time to fulfill his undoubted potential. After spending a couple of years to adapt to the new surroundings, Ronaldo exploded in the 2006-07 season, when his 23 goals helped United win the Premier League title.

The Portuguese continued to dazzle at Old Trafford, winning several domestic titles with United and numerous personal awards before moving to Real Madrid in the £80 million deal in the summer of 2009. Ronaldo immediately became an essential part of the squad at Santiago Bernabeu and is now completely focused on helping los Blancos finally end Barcelona’s dominance in both Spain and Europe.

International Career

Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003 against Kazakhstan and he soon became an integral part of Portugal’s team that finished as runners-up at the Euro 2004, while being named in the team of the tournament after scoring two goals. Ronaldo took part in the 2006 World Cup with Portugal, but couldn’t prevent Selecao from losing the semi-finals to France.

The player scored eight goals in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, but was again powerless to prevent Portugal’s exit in the quarter-finals, while he also failed to make an impact at the 2010 World Cup. Having scored the total of five goals at four major tournaments, Cristiano Ronaldo has clearly failed to prove his credentials at international stage, although he will have another chance to do so after his national team ensured their place at the Euro 2012.
