Inter vs Fiorentina

By: Matthew Clarke

Inter kept their Serie A title hopes alive thanks to Pazzini’s injury-time brace against Cesena and the Neroazzurri are now looking to continue the good run of results against high-flying Fiorentina. Viola kept the spirits high with the 5:2 win over Udinese and there is no doubt they will try to produce an upset at Giuseppe Meazza.

Pazzini the saviour

Inter have found it tough to cope with the disappointing elimination from the Champions League and the fact they have lost all chances to lift the Serie A title, and even though Leonardo’s men have now won three games in a row, we can honestly say they were very lucky to beat Lazio and especially Cesena. Inter looked to be destined for a defeat at Dino Manuzzi, but Giampaolo Pazzini scored two goals in injury time to help his side record a valuable victory. While the Neroazzurri are now looking to cement the second place in the standings with a win over Fiorentina, it is very likely that they will also be thinking about the Coppa Italia semi-final return leg against Roma, due just three days later, which is why I believe Fiorentina have a chance to get something from this game. With the attacking potential at their disposal, there is no doubt Inter will score, but their back line will be in trouble after conceding in four of their last five games.

Wesley Sneijder is unlikely to be risked as he is still not fully fit, while Samuel, Stankovic, Cordoba, Pandev and Mariga are also unavailable.

Fiorentina on top of their game

Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has experienced numerous problems in trying to make this team play to their potential, with his task made difficult by the constant absence of key players, and the Viola fans are definitely happy to see the transition period finally over. Fiorentina have shown a lot of improvement in the second part of the season and even though that is too little too late, at least Viola will have something to build on for next league campaign. The impressive victories over Cagliari and Udinese have shown that Fiorentina have got enough quality to fight for European places and there is no doubt that Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side will be looking to end the season on a high. Having scored five goals against very good Udinese side, Viola can be expected to cause Inter all sorts of problems at the back and there is every chance we will see a very open game at Meazza.

Adrian Mutu remains injury doubt, while Stevan Jovetic is a long-term casualty.

Verdict

Inter continued the good scoring form in Cesena, even if they scored both goals in injury time, so we can expect the Neroazzurri to score against Fiorentina as well, but they are likely to have problems at the back with Viola scoring goals for fun at the moment. Therefore, my advice is to back both teams to score.
