The Derby Della Madonnina comes at an important time for both Milanese sides with Nerazzurri hoping to grab three points that could propel them to the top of the table. On the other side, Rossoneri are desperately needing a victory and a morale boost after a disappointing AS Roma blow just before the international break.
Inter Milan eyeing top spot
Revitalized and revolutionized Inter Milan are beginning to pick the fruits of their labour. Better yet, the labour of the new owners who are hoping this would be the year their investment begins to pay off itself. Level on points with Serie A champions Juventus, Inter Milan are sitting in third place with only a frustrating 1-1 draw against Bologna ruining their perfect domestic record. Nerazzurri are a team in transition and their positive league records do not reveal the entire story, however. Having shown plenty of promise against Fiorentina and AS Roma, Inter Milan were somewhat lethargic in games against rivals such as Crotone, Benevento, SPAL and Genoa they were expected to have no problems against. Luciano Spalletti is still completing the puzzle and searching for all the ingredients but Inter Milan are a team with plenty of potential and are ready to show it with a win that would take them top of the standings.
The nominal hosts in this match will be without influential winger Marcelo Brozovic who picked up a muscle injury, while Joao Cancelo is struggling with a knee problem.
The new Milan shaping up
Ten new players and Gianluigi Donnarumma who decided to stay with the club despite great pressure during summer have transformed AC Milan into a great force once again. Rossoneri were the talk of the town at the beginning of the campaign and they had all eyes on them with the world watching if the new signings worth more than 100 euro would fare at the beginning of their AC Milan life. Vincenzo Montella was and remains under great scrutiny as well. The young tactician made most of the club’s youth academy last season as the club went through a prolonged takeover, but found himself under great pressure now that Rossoneri need to justify the heavy spending. Four wins and three defeats are not the result that was expected from the club and Montella could find himself on thin ice if he loses the third consecutive match. The international break came at just the perfect time for Milan who were coming off from back-to-back defeats to Sampdoria and Roma, respectively. A win in the Derby is thus of great importance for the coach who intends to demonstrate that the new Milan project is not getting off the track.
Milan are heading into the derby match without suspended Calhanoglu and injured Conti, Kalinic and Musacchio. Antonelli and Bonaventura have had some injury and illness problems and will be assessed on matchday.
The Milan derbies are traditionally exciting affairs and we expect to see a similar one this weekend. Both sides are under great pressure and in need of a win, so goals could be the safest option for the match here.
