Evian vs PSG

By: Nemanja Lazarevic

Being outside the relegation zone by virtue of goal difference alone, Evian will be looking to put a dent into PSG’s title hopes and climb further away from the bottom three. The Saints are looking to get revenge on les Roses for the costly defeat in Coupe de France and edge closer to the first league title after 1994.

Tough times for Evian

Everybody was shocked to see minnows Evian gain promotion to Ligue 1 some two years back, but they not only ensured survival in their first season in the top flight but achieved a ninth-place finish. This season has not been as successful as the last, but the team seem to have too much quality to go down. Les Roses have been showing a lot of improvement since the turn of the year, which has something to do with the arrivals of Milos Ninkovic and Betao, who have been in fine form since joining the club from Dynamo Kiev. Evian proved to be one of the most entertaining sides in the top flight, with their last seven games featuring 26 goals, and another high-scoring encounter looks on the cards. Evian may face a tough task against the Ligue 1 leaders, but having defeated them on penalties in Coupe de France some tend days ago, les Roses have reason to believe they can get something from this game as well. The hosts have some important missings, but the squad seem to have decent strength in depth.

Djakaridja Kone, Sidney Govou, Jonathan Mensah, Ali M’Madi and Herve Bugnet are all unavailable through injury.

PSG close in on league title

Having recovered well from early season struggles, Paris Saint-Germain quickly started showing what they were capable of, with the team in scintillating form ever since the start of December. Team’s Champions League campaign and excellent showings against Valencia and Barcelona proved the Saints have what it takes to mix it up with the best of their in Europe, while they are slowly becoming the dominant force in France. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are just few steps away from the first league title since 1994, with nine-point cushion likely to prove enough for the final five games. PSG are currently on a four-match winning run in the league, but they are still hurting from the Coupe de France exit at the hands of Evian. This is a perfect opportunity to get revenge for the defeat and at the same time virtually secure the league title. Having looked pretty good on the travels of late, the Saints do look the favourites to win at Parc des Sports.

Thiago Motta serves the second game of his three-match ban, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lucas Moura are doubtful through virus and injury respectively.

Verdict

Evian are not only in desperate need of points, but they have enough attacking potential to hurt their more illustrious opponents, and with PSG likely to adopt attacking approach as well, we could see goals galore at Parc des Sports. The Saints do seem closer to winning at the moment, but they are unlikely to have an easy job against les Roses.
