Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has suggested that Sevilla have enough quality to win the UEFA Champions League this season.

The Spaniards come into the current campaign as reigning UEFA Europa League winners, a record sixth success in the competition. They haven’t quite managed to replicate that success in Europe’s premier competition though having only gone as far as the quarter-finals on two occasions.

Having seen his Chelsea side hold Sevilla to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in their opening group game on Tuesday evening, Lampard believes that the Spaniards are capable of lifting the trophy this season.

Talking after the match, he said: “Sevilla are one of the many teams that could win this tournament.

“This (draw) is a positive result. I understood the need to obtain a good result in the first group match. They are a very good team, it was an interesting match and I am happy with the 0-0, it was very important to keep our clean sheet.

“I was pleased with the professional component. I spoke with the players about the management of the match. The reaction was very positive.

“Sevilla are a first-rate team and the concentration and focus you need to get this result was great. We made a lot of good decisions and that’s something you can build on.”

Despite Lampard backing Sevilla for success, Julen Lopetegui’s men sit at large odds of 35/1 with Betfair to win the Champions League this season.
