Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that he is one of the greatest footballers in the history of the sport.

The Portuguese superstar has long since provoked debate over his status at the peak of the game, with former La Liga rival Lionel Messi also drawing plenty of plaudits.

One thing that isn’t in doubt though is Ronaldo’s phenomenal goalscoring record for Sporting Portugal, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and international side Portugal. He has scored 602 club goals, as well as 93 strikes on the international stage – something that he believes puts him in the pantheon of all-time greats.

Talking to ITV, the 34-year-old said: “I’m sure I’m in the history of football for what I have done and what I’m continuing to do, but one of the best players in history.

“For me, the number one in history, but for some fans, if the number one is another one and I’m second, it doesn’t matter.

“I know I’m in the history of football as one of the greatest ever.”

He has a chance to write another glorious chapter in the UEFA Champions League as Juventus get their campaign underway against Atletico Madrid, a club in which he has scored a brilliant 25 goals in 33 career appearances.

Ronaldo is at 4/1 with Betfair to open the scoring.
