Raphael VaraneReal Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti must have had a sigh of relief when talented defender Raphael Varane took part in yesterday’s training session of the France national team.

The 20-year-old had just returned into action from a knee injury that kept him out for four months, but he missed the France training on Wednesday, which was enough to suggest he has suffered a recurrence of the long-term problem.

Nevertheless, Varane was working with his teammates in les Bleus’ final preparation session ahead of the friendly against Australia, meaning he could even get some much needed playing time on Friday.

France are 1.33 (1/3) favourites with William Hill to see off the weakened Socceroos, with Varane 10.00 (9/1) at Coral to get on the scoresheet.

After making the centre-back position at Santiago Bernabeu his own last term, the youngster is expected to return to the starting line-up as soon as he reaches full fitness.

Real Madrid host Malaga next Saturday and chances are Varane will be in contention for a starting berth in that match.
