Nikola Kalinić is reportedly close to signing for Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, according to speculation in Spain.

Reports from Spanish radio station SER suggest that a fee has been agreed and that the two parties have also come to an agreement on personal terms.

The only stumbling block was for Milan to get a replacement in at the San Siro, however they have now secured the signature of Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain, so the move can now be completed.

Kalinić moves to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano to provide competition for Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa following Fernando Torres’ move to Japan. The transfer will also allow Kevin Gameiro to complete his drawn-out switch to Spanish rivals Valencia. A fee of €16m has reportedly been agreed for the 31-year-old striker.

His replacement Kalinić will hope the move to Atleti reignites a career that appears to have stumbled in the last few years. Following his move to Milan from Fiorentina, he only scored six goals in 41 appearances. He also had a tricky World Cup despite Croatia reaching the final. The 30-year-old was sent home from Russia after refusing to come on as a substitute against Nigeria in the group stages.

However, he should strengthen Atelti’s pursuit of silverware this season. Diego Simeone’s men are currently third favourites with the bookmakers William Hill to claim the La Liga title with odds of 9/1 available.
