Diego Costa has departed Atletico Madrid for the third time in his career having seen his contract with the club terminated.

It has long since been rumoured that the striker had fallen down the pecking order at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Diego Simeone reportedly no longer seeing him as part of his plans.

Having rejoined the club from Chelsea for a huge fee just under two years ago, the Spanish giants confirmed the departure of Costa on Tuesday morning.

A statement released by the club read: “Atlético de Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement for the termination of the striker’s contract, which was to end on June 30, 2021. The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract.”

“The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career,” it continued.

Throughout his three spells in Madrid, the Brazilian-born forward scored 83 goals and provided 36 assists in 215 appearances. He was also instrumental as Los Rojiblancos lifted the La Liga crown in 2014.

However, he has only managed to find the net on 19 occasions since rejoining the club, falling behind the likes of Alvaro Morata, Luis Suarez and Joao Felix.

With Costa having departed, Atleti will be striving to continue their challenge for the La Liga title and sit at odds of 13/10 with Betfair to lift the trophy come the end of the season.
