Spanish Primera Division was established in 1929, no less than 27 years after the first Copa del Rey campaign and a total of ten clubs took part in the first edition of the championship. Six teams were elected as previous winners of the aforementioned Cup competitions, three sides qualified as Copa del Rey runners-up, whereas Racing Santander won the qualifying tournament.
