La Liga History

Spanish Primera Division was established in 1929, no less than 27 years after the first Copa del Rey campaign and a total of ten clubs took part in the first edition of the championship. Six teams were elected as previous winners of the aforementioned Cup competitions, three sides qualified as Copa del Rey runners-up, whereas Racing Santander won the qualifying tournament. It was Barcelona who won the first league title, but Athletic Bilbao dominated the opening years of the competition and los Leones remain one of just three founding teams that were never relegated from Spain’s top flight.

Real Madrid and Barcelona dominated the competition from the 1950s onwards, with los Blancos winning 31 league trophies and Catalans lifting 21 titles. Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia are the only other teams that have more than five league titles to their name, and to this date, only nine sides have lifted the Primera Division trophy.
