Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has praised goalkeeper Scott Carson after the goalkeeper made his debut in the Champions League for the Citizens.

Defending Premier League champions City played out a goalless draw with Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening.

City won the first leg 5-0 in Portugal, which means that they have gone through to the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition with ease.

Goalkeeper Carson, 36, made his Champions League debut for City, coming on for Ederson on 73 minutes.

Guardiola told City’s official website: “We are delighted. He is very important to us behind the scenes.

“His chemistry with Ederson and Zack Steffen is fundamental in the locker room. People listen when he speaks. He made the biggest save (of the game).”

City are the favourites to win the Champions League this season at 9/4 on Betfair.
