Walter MazzarriNapoli manager Walter Mazzarri has moved to confirm reports that he is set to step down at the end of the current campaign.

The long-serving manager transformed the Azzurri into a genuine title contenders over the last couple of years and he led them to second-place finish in Serie A this term.

However, he has decided to call it quits at the end of the season and is ready to negotiate with interested clubs.

“From next year onwards I will no longer be the coach of Napoli, I did not say anything before because there would’ve been a backlash which could have had a devastating effect on the team and the city,” Mazzarri told Radio Rai.

“I must thank the president and (sporting director Riccardo) Bigon for trying to change my mind, but I made this decision because I needed a new challenge.

“My next team? Until now I have not considered anyone in particular, but tomorrow I’ll have a look around. Based on what I can offer, I could join a new club immediately, otherwise I’d take a year off.”

Chelsea outgoing manager Rafael Benitez has long been linked with a managerial job at Stadio San Paolo and he is 1.57 (4/7) with BetVictor to take over the reigns.

Udinese boss Francesco Guidolin is 17.00 (16/1) to be next Napoli permanent manager and Inter’s Andrea Stramaccioni is 34.00 (33/1).
