Jose Mourinho has made a shock return to football having been confirmed as AS Roma’s new manager.
The Portuguese has been out of work since his sacking by Tottenham Hotspur last month, being replaced by former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason.
He takes the reins at the Stadio Olimpico from countryman Paulo Fonseca who it has been confirmed is set to leave at the end of the season.
Mourinho has signed a three-year deal in the eternal city.
Upon the announcement of his arrival, the Portuguese said: “After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma.
“It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.
“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.”
His arrival in Rome signals Mourinho’s first return to Italy since 2010 when he won the treble with Inter Milan.
In the meantime, the Serie A giants will be aiming to find a way back into the UEFA Europa League after being defeated 6-2 by Manchester United in the semi-final first-leg. They can be backed at a price of 66/1 with Betfair to qualify for the final in Gdansk.
