Napoli record goalscorer Dries Mertens has extended his stay with the club by penning a new contract.

The Belgian forward has signed a deal that is set to run until the summer of 2022, which would see him spend a total of nine seasons at the Stadio San Paolo.

Since signing from Dutch side PSV back in the summer of 2013, the now 33-year-old has made a total of 310 appearances for the club and scored 122 goals with 73 assists. He became the club’s record goalscorer last week as he scored in the 1-1 draw against Inter Milan as Napoli reach the Copa Italia final, beating the likes of Marek Hamsik and Diego Maradona in the process.

Whilst having only started in just under half of all of his side’s matches so far this season, he has still scored 13 goals and provided 6 assists. He has also been in brilliant form in the Champions League, netting six in just seven appearances.

The Belgian, capped 90 times by his national side, was previously linked with a move to Chelsea but is now set to remain in Naples.

Mertens could be set to celebrate his new deal in the best way by netting against Hellas Verona away from home next Tuesday. Napoli currently sit at 1/1 with William Hill to earn victory.
