Birmingham City have confirmed Harry Redknapp has been appointed as the permanent manager.

The seasoned tactician has signed a one-year deal after securing the Championship survival with the club during the final three matches of the 2016/17 season.

Redknapp took over from Gianfranco Zola who got sacked after winning just two of 24 matches.

Redknapp took over with three games to go and the 70-year-old former West Ham and Tottenham manager earned his permanent deal after winning two of three fixtures, steering Birmingham away from relegation to League One by two points.

Birmingham job is his first since leaving QPR in February 2015.

Redknapp initially signed a short-term deal at St Andrew’s and revealed he would not be paid if he was unable to fight for survival and keep Birmingham in the second division.

The veteran manager did not have the best of starts however as his first game in charge against local rivals Aston Villa turned out to be a 1-0 defeat. Redknapp however guided the team to back-to-back victories over Huddersfield Town and Bristol City respectively.

Harry Redknapp will be working under former Real Madrid scout Jeff Vetere, who was this week named director of football at Birmingham City.

Redknapp’s backroom staff will be announced ‘in due course’ as former manager of clubs such as Portsmouth and Southampton begins preparations for a promotion push next season.
