Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has said that his side can compete with Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli despite their heavy defeat in their opening UEFA Champions League game of the season.

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers lost 4-0 to Eredivisie powerhouse Ajax away from home on Wednesday evening.

Van Bronckhorst told Football.London after the match: “To compete in the Champions League, you need hundreds of millions. Otherwise you can’t compete.

“If you look at all the squads we’re facing now, look at Ajax they sold [players] for over £200m. Liverpool as well.

“For us to compete with them it’s too much to ask. We want to compete but we want to compete with the squad we have, and the squad we are able and capable of making. We knew it was going to be tough as shown today.”

Rangers will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Aberdeen away from home in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers can be backed at 7/1 on Betfair to win the game against Aberdeen 2-0.
