Van Persie pulls out of Netherlands squad

Van Persie NetherlandsManchester United striker Robin van Persie was forced to withdraw from the Netherlands squad for friendly matches against Japan and Colombia.

The highly rated forward scored the winning goal for Manchester United against former club Arsenal at the weekend, but he won’t be featuring for his country during the international break.

Netherlands medical team decided not to risk the experienced forward after he complained of groin and toe injuries following the derby match against the Gunners.

Oranje face Japan in Genk on Saturday before hosting Colombia in Amsterdam next Tuesday, and this will be a perfect opportunity for boss Louis Van Gaal to test some new players.

Dirk Kuyt and Jordy Clasie also miss out through injury, with Siem de Jong, Leroy Fer and David Propper called as replacements.

High-flying Netherlands are 1.45 (9/20) with Sportingbet to continue their winning run against Japan, whereas they are priced at 21.00 (20/1) to go all the way at the 2014 World Cup.
