Wigan

All three teams relegated from the Premier League in May signalled their intentions of securing an immediate return to the top flight after recording victories on the opening day of the Championship season.

Wigan Athletic have the honour of topping the table after the first round of fixtures, after thumping Barnsley 4-0 at Oakwell in Owen Coyle’s first competitive game in charge of the North West club.

Goals from FA Cup final hero Ben Watson and Shaun Maloney came either side of efforts from new signings Grant Holt and Leon Barnett to wrap up the victory for the Latics, who have seen their odds of winning the title slashed to just 11.0 (10/1) with Coral, who also offer the best price of 4.33 (10/3) in the promotion market.

Queens Park Rangers and Reading both came from behind to secure wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town respectively, with pre-season favourites Rangers still heading the market at 6.5 (11/2) for the title and 2.75 (7/4) for promotion by any means.

Reading unsurprisingly remain joint second favourites to bounce straight back to the Promised Land with most firms offering 9.0 (8/1) to clinch a second second-tier title in three years, and Sky Bet giving the best odds of 3.75 (11/4) for manager Nigel Adkins to secure yet another promotion.

Watford are also available at 9.0 (8/1) to win the division after securing a 1-0 victory at Birmingham City, just ahead of Nottingham Forest, who are 11.0 (10/1) across the board having beaten Huddersfield Town by the same scoreline.

The Hornets are priced at 4.0 (3/1) with Betfred to go up, while Forest can be backed at 4.33 (10/3) with the majority of bookmakers.

Bolton Wanderers are next in the market despite only drawing against local rivals Burnley in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.

The Trotters, who almost made the top six last time around, are 4.5 (7/2) to make return to the top flight and 13.0 (12/1) to do so by being crowned champions.

Leicester City staged a second-half comeback to secure victory over Middlesbrough, keeping their title-winning odds at 15.0 (14/1),

Nigel Pearson’s men are 5.5 (9/2) in the promotion market, ahead of Leeds United, who are 7.0 (6/1) having secured a last gasp victory over 7.5 (13/2) shots Brighton and Hove Albion.
