Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Hungary and Turkey.
The 25-year-old had been expected to play some part following a bright start to the season, but he had to return to Paris due to a knee injury.
“After travelling to Amsterdam and back, the Paris Saint-Germain defender returned to the Ooredoo Training Centre and he will remain to receive treatment during the international break,” a statement on PSG’s official website read.
After playing second fiddle to Christophe Jallet for most of last season, the full-back finally nailed down a regular starting berth at Parc des Princes this term.
He started six Ligue 1 matches this season, but a chronic knee problem could prevent him from realizing his full potential at PSG.
Meanwhile, Netherlands, who have already secured World Cup berth, are 1.36 (4/11) with Sportingbet to defeat Hungary on Friday.
