Despite being considered as one of Europe’s top 5 leagues, French Ligue 1 is not getting the acclaim it deserves. Many believe the competition to be pretty boring and to only yield low-scoring games, but we beg to differ.

After Marseille beat Lille 5:4 in Trophee des Champions that traditionally precedes the start of Ligue 1, I just cannot wait for the league battles to get started.

Having won their first title in 57 years, as well as Coupe de France last season, Lille have been far from impressive in pre-season, just like Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille, so nothing could suggest that we will see a real thriller at Tangiers Stadium in Morocco.

Les Dogues looked to be heading for an easy win when Eden Hazard made it 2:0 just before the hour mark, after he had previously set up Florent Balmont for the opening goal, but that goal seemed to have woken up Marseille from their sleep.

Andre Ayew pulled one back following a visionary assist from wantaway midfielder Lucho Gonzalez, but Ligue 1 top scorer Moussa Sow made it 3:1 in the very next minute.

Five minutes from time new signing from Lorient Jeremy Morel made it 3:2 before Loic Remy finally leveled the score just two minutes later.

Andre Ayew thought he had brought a victory to Marseille as he scored from a penalty in the final minute of regular time, but there was still time for new Lille signing Marko Basa to make it 4:4 in the second minute of extra time.

However, as the time ran out, Jordan Ayew was fouled in the penalty area for the second time, before his brother Andre scored another penalty to bring this entertaining tie to an end and set the final result to 5:4.

Marseille and Lille were always considered the most entertaining sides in France and this match did nothing to hurt their reputation, so all football fans are eagerly awaiting the start of French Ligue 1 and the title race that is likely to involve the two teams, together with Paris Saint-Germain.

Marseille are currently seen as favourites for the title, being priced 3.25 (9/4) at Victor Chandler, whereas Lille are no less than 7.00 (6/1) to defend the league title. Newly rich PSG are 4.50 (7/2) with Sportingbet.
