Italy vs Slovenia preview

This match will be much more important for Slovenia than Italy as Matjaz Kek’s side need to get something from this match after losing at home to Estonia.

Italy, on the other hand, are eight points clear of Slovenia and Serbia, but they want to ensure qualification as soon as possible and will be looking to win the game in Florence. Unibet has by far the best price on home win, paying 1.42 (5/12) on Italy.

Following the impressive wins in Slovenia and at home to Estonia, the Azzurri were largely disappointing in Faroe Islands, allowing the hosts to hit the woodwork twice, but still managed to win the game thanks to Antonio Cassano.

The Milan forward is set to continue his attacking partnership with Giuseppe Rossi, but we should see two changes to the starting line-up.

Mattia Cassani is expected to start at right back at the expense of Christian Maggio, whereas Claudio Marchisio will be preferred to Thiago Motta.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-1-2): Buffon – Cassani, Ranocchia, Chiellini, Criscito – De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio – Montolivo – Rossi, Cassano.

After the impressive showing at 2010 World Cup, Slovenia were expected to battle with Italy for the first place in the standings, but Matjaz Kek’s side failed to live up to the expectations.

The home defeat to Northern Ireland was quickly erased with one point from Serbia and wins over Faroe Islands and Estonia, but Zmajceki just couldn’t keep their rich vein of form.

Slovenia made two more slip-ups, having lost at home to Italy and brought just one point from Northern Ireland, whereas the Friday’s home defeat to Estonia put a real dent into their qualifying hopes.

Matjaz Kek’s side need to try and get something from this game, but even if they lose in Italy, they will have a chance to beat Serbia in their final qualifier and thus probably ensure the place in the play-offs, so you should bear in mind that Slovenia are 7.50 (13/2) with Unibet to finish in second place.

First choice keeper Samir Handanovic is suspended for the Italy clash, meaning that his cousin Jasmin Handanovic will start in goal.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): J. Handanovic – Brecko, Ilic, Cesar, Jokic – Birsa, Koren, Radosavljevic, Ilicic – Novakovic, Matavz.
