BBC Sport has learned that Steven Fletcher and Tom Cairney will take no part in Scotland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Gordon Strachan’s side face Lithuania on the road on 1st September before playing host to Malta three days later, and they need to win both matches if they are to keep their qualifying hopes alive.

That will be no easy task, especially now that Steven Fletcher and Tom Cairney have withdrawn from the squad.

Both players picked up injuries at the weekend and Gordon Strachan now needs to decide whether he will call any replacements.

Celtic’s Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie have been tipped to be drafted into the squad, with Scotland 5/6 favourites to beat Lithuania.

They trail second-place Slovakia four points ahead of the final four fixtures following the highly entertaining 2-2 draw with bitter rivals England.
