Croatia vs Portugal preview

Portugal vs RussiaFresh from the disappointing defeat to Scotland in the World Cup qualifiers, Croatia face Portugal at Stade de Geneve in Switzerland.

Meanwhile, the Seleccao revived their qualifying hopes by beating Russia at home, and they are now looking to defeat out-of-sorts Croatia as well.

With Igor Stimac inheriting a high-quality side from his predecessor Slaven Bilic, Croatia were seen as the number one favourites in Group A of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The team indeed experienced all sorts of problems in the opening exchanges, but somehow managed to win five of first six games and were tied with Belgium at the top of the group.

And just when everybody expected an easy victory over severely weakened Scotland, the Blazers produced a shocking display at home and seriously damaged their qualifying hopes with the 1-0 defeat on Friday.

There are no doubts Igor Stimac’s men will have problems recovering from such a big blow, so I don’t really see any value in odds of 3.10 (21/10) offered at bet365 on home win.

Igor Stimac will have Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka back from suspension, but a number of first team regulars miss out.

Stipe Pletikosa, Gordon Schildenfeld, Eduardo da Silva, Nikica Jelavic, Mario Mandzukic and Josip Simunic have left the squad, with Under-21 defender Igor Bubnjic added to the side.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Subasic – Srna, Vida, Corluka, Strinic – Rakitic, Modric, Vukojevic, Kranjcar – Kalinic, Olic.

Just like their next opponents, Portugal had a very slow start to the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and they were sitting in third place ahead of the crucial qualifier against Russia.

Unexpected slip-ups against Northern Ireland and Israel placed the team in a very difficult position, making the Russia clash a do or die for them.

The Seleccao, nonetheless, produced a very good performance when it was needed the most, with 1-0 victory seeing them climb to the top of the group.

Given that Russia have two games in hand, Portugal look likely to finish in second place, but at least their qualification is no longer in danger.

Buoyed by the excellent result on Friday, the Seleccao look a good bet to see off struggling Croatia, with Coral paying 2.50 (3/2) on away win.

Midfielders Miguel Veloso and Danny have been allowed to return to their clubs, but all other players are fit, including Pepe, who returns from suspension.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Patricio – Silvio, Neto, Pepe, Coentrao – Amorim, Micael, Moutinho – Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo.
