Copa America: Colombia vs Peru preview

Having won Group A in front of hosts Argentina, Colombia have got to be considered favourites in this match, especially as Peru only made it through as one of two best third-placed teams.

Following the pretty good showings in the World Cup qualifying campaign and the emergence of quality players such as Falcao, Guarin and Adrian Ramos, to name just a few, los Cafeteros arrived to Copa America as one of the candidates for the trophy.

Hernan Gomez’s side didn’t need a lot of time to prove their worth as they beat Costa Rica in their opening game before completely outclassing hosts Argentina in their second group game.

Comfortable win over Bolivia that saw star striker Falcao score his first goals of the tournament helped the team secure the first place in the group and earn a clash with Peru.

Taking into account Colombia’s recent form and the fact they are brimming with confidence, I see a great value in odds of 1.80 (4/5) offered by Stan James on home win.

Los Cafeteros remain the only team yet to concede a goal at 2011 Copa America, and they are now 2.05 (21/20) with Victor Chandler to keep fourth successive clean sheet in Argentina.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Martinez – Zuniga, Yepes, Perea, Armero – Sanchez – Moreno, Guarin, Aguilar, Ramos – Falcao.

When the Copa America draw was made, Peru were given virtually no chances to qualify for the second stage, but the favourable competition format as well as the fact that Mexico arrived to Argentina with severely weakened squad helped the minnows make it to the quarter-finals.

La Blanquirroja did surprise Uruguay in their opening game, having earned a 1:1 draw against la Celeste, but they had a lot of problems against Mexico and Chile, hinting that they are still not ready to match the best sides in South America.

Coach Sergio Markarian is being criticized for defensive style of play, but in all fairness to him, with Paolo Guerrero as the only recognized striker in the side he doesn’t have a lot of options.

The boss is hoping the starters Juan Manuel Vargas and Sergio Acasiete will recover from muscle problems to face Colombia, but another first team regular, Giancarlo Carmona is out through suspension after picking up a red card against Chile.

Probable starting line-up (4-5-1): Fernandez – Balbin, Acasiete, Rodriguez, Wilchez – Advincula, Cruzado, Lobaton, Guevara, Vargas – Guerrero.
