Wales star Gareth Bale is a fitness doubt for the Dragons’ matches against Spain and Republic of Ireland, according to boss Ryan Giggs.

The Real Madrid forward reportedly missed training on Monday after picking up a problem in a 1-0 defeat to Alaves at the weekend. Giggs has revealed that he needs to think carefully about how much playing time he affords the 29-year-old over the most recent international break.

Speaking ahead of Wales’ friendly clash with Spain on Thursday evening, he said: “Sometimes it’s not easy, especially for the likes of Gareth, they’re in the middle of the Champions League, so there’s a midweek game, and at Real Madrid you have to win every game.

“It’s just getting that balance right, how many minutes he plays, whether he misses a game, and what’s best for us and Real. Obviously, ideally I want him to play every minute of every game.”

Despite having already scored four goals and providing three assists in all competitions this season, Bale has not scored in four league games as Real Madrid have stuttered.

Regardless of being an injury doubt, the former Tottenham Hotspur man is one of the favourites to open the scoring against Spain. He can be backed at 11/2 with William Hill.
