Real Betis vs Lyon preview

Real Betis vs LyonReal Betis will be looking to build on weekend’s 3-1 victory over Valencia when they host Lyon at the start of their Europa League campaign, while les Gones arrive at Estadio Benito Villamarin desperate to end a five-match winless run.

Los Verdiblancos haven’t quite managed to take full advantage of what was a breakthrough season for them, having seen a number of important players leave the club during the summer.

The club management in turn signed quite a few new players, but next to none high-profile ones, so nobody was surprise to see Betis struggle in the opening exchanges.

While picking up just one point from first three league fixtures, the team impressed to record an 8-1 aggregate win over Jablonec in Europa League play-offs, and no doubt the resounding triumph helped los Verdiblancos return to the right track.

Pepe Mel’s side finally recorded their first league victory of the season as they completely outclassed Valencia at home, and they are now 2.00 (1/1) favourites with Coral to see off out-of-sorts Lyon as well.

The boss has received a huge boost on Monday as key players Joan Verdu and Ruben Castro resumed full training, although Juan Carlos remains sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Sara – Chica, Paulao, Amaya, Nacho – Torres, Igiebor – Cedric, Verdu, Molina – Castro.

Even with the likes of Lisandro, Bastos and Lovren all leaving the club and no major signings arriving, Lyon enjoyed a very successful start to the season.

The 2-0 aggregate triumph over Grasshoppers in the Champions League third qualifying round was followed by comfortable victories over Nice and Sochaux in the league, which hinted les Gones could turn this season into a major success.

However, the good run was short-lived as Remi Garde’s men not only crashed out of Europe’s elite competition on the back of two 2-0 defeats to Real Sociedad, but also lost to Reims and Evian in Ligue 1.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Jimmy Briand have since been restored to the first team set-up, but they couldn’t help les Gones beat Rennes at the weekend, meaning they are now on a five-match winless run.

Lyon may be 4.00 (3/1) with Sportingbet to win in Seville, but they will have to show a massive improvement in order to defeat their opponents.

Yoann Gourcuff, Milan Bisevac, Gael Danic, Miguel Lopes, Remy Vercoutre and Rachid Ghezzal are all unavailable through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): A. Lopes – Dabo, Kone, Umtiti, Bedimo – Malbranque, Gonalons, Grenier – Lacazette, Gomis, Briand.
