Chelsea vs Basel preview

Basel vs ChelseaThe late winner scored by David Luiz at Basel ensured Chelsea take a one-goal advantage into the return leg, with the Blues expected to finish the job at their Stamford Bridge.

Basel will have to show a massive improvement if they are to have any chance of staying in the competition, as they were well below par in the first match.

With all-important games against Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton coming thick and fast, the Blues might have problems focusing on their Europa League campaign, although having come this far they should be ready for the final push.

Rafa Benitez’s men will have to forget all about the Premiership top 4 race and concentrate on the return leg against Basel, which is going to be anything but a walk in the park.

Chelsea’s second string line-up looked very good in the first leg and deservedly recorded a 2-1 victory, so no wonder they are 1.50 (1/2) favourites with bet365 to win the return leg as well.

Fernando Torres missed several good opportunities in Switzerland, but he is 2.20 (6/5) at Coral to get on the scoresheet at home ground.

Rafa Benitez is again set to field a weakened line-up, with the Spaniard spoilt for choices now that Oriol Romeu is the only player missing.

Demba Ba is cup-tied, meaning Fernando Torres will get another chance to prove he deserves a regular starting berth.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Cech – Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Terry, Bertrand – Lampard, Mikel – Moses, Oscar, Benayoun – Torres.

Having played so well in Europe this season, Basel were tipped to prove their worth in the first leg against Chelsea, but the Swiss side utterly failed to live up to the billing.

With key players Salah, Stocker and Streller looking increasingly average on the night, and their teammates failing to show desire to win the game, Basel have nobody else to blame but themselves for the fact they face a mountain to climb at Stamford Bridge.

The team appear to be in a bad spot at the moment, as witnessed by the 3-0 home defeat to Luzern, and the lack of confidence is going to seriously affect them in London.

The Swiss giants may be 11.00 (10/1) at Sportingbet to make it through, but I dare say there are no value in those odds.

Basel haven’t won a single away fixture in Europa League this term, so we cannot really expect the poor run will end at Stamford Bridge.

Key defender Aleksandar Dragovic misses out through suspension, while Kay Voser remains on the sidelines.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Sommer – P. Degen, Schar, Sauro, Park – Die, Nenny, F. Frei – Salah, Streller, Stocker.
