A busy Sunday of Premier League action kicks off at the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland host Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby.

The hosts currently sit rock bottom of the table with three points and have lost six of their opening nine games – the latest of those defeats coming at West Bromwich Albion last weekend in Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge.

The former Newcastle manager can immediately make amends for that loss by taking all three points here and recent history is on the Black Cats side.

They have won the last five meetings between the sides and haven’t lost this fixture since August 2011.

Fabio Borini, Duncan Watmore and Jack Rodwell are all out injured though Ola Toivonen is fit and Jermain Lens and Sebastien Coates both return from suspension.

Jermaine Defoe, who bagged the winner when the sides met on Wearside back in April is favourite to open the scoring at 7.0 (6/1) with a variety of firms while Steven Fletcher is an 8.0 (7/1) chance with Bet 365.

The home win is a 2.7 (17/10) chance with Bet Victor with the visitors as highly priced as the 2.92 (23/12) on offer from 888 Sport. The draw is widely available at 3.4 (12/5).

Steve McClaren finally secured his first league win as Newcastle manager last weekend, with his side thumping Norwich City by six goals to two.

Three points here will take them outside of the relegation zone, with seventeenth place Bournemouth playing Tottenham Hotspur later in the day.

The Magpies have no fresh injury concerns, though Kevin Mbabu and Rolando Aarons are both pushing for recalls having recovering from their respective hamstring and calf injuries.

Aleksndar Mitrovic can be backed at 7.5 (13/2) to get the first goal of the game with Bet 365 while last weekend’s four goal hero Georginio Wijnaldum a 10.0 (9/1) chance with the same firm.

Both of last season’s meetings between the sides ended in 1-0 wins for the Mackems and with another tightly fought contest expected here you may be tempted to back there being less than two goals in the game at 3.6 (13/5) with Betfair.
